There are lessons to be learned from history. One is touted above by Mr. Nicklaus when he says, be prepared for the unexpected. Another is from Mr. Maley when he states emphatically that a crash in todays environment can only unfold due to forced selling. I agree with both gentlemen. To some degree.

The lesson I learned from Black Monday is one I already knew. And here it is: History repeats itself in real life as well as in the marketplace. A very simple lesson but one that should never be forgotten.

He has been quoted often in Wall Street Journal and is author of Commodity Insite, one of the longest commodity futures newspaper columns in history. His weekly column has been published each week since the mid 1980's and is one of the most recognized names in the world of commodities.

Mr. Welch is also known widely as a, "so so" flyfisherman.
