Daily Market Commentary for September 5, 2008

Mortgage Industry

The trading session was interesting with the markets moving sharply lower on the trading session and holding in negative territory through out most of the day until the final hour of trading. At the closing bell, the major U.S. indices closed mixed after losses were extended during the trading session. Early on in the day, data released for the Employment Situation (details lower in this Daily Commentary) provided the go ahead for the markets to dip into the negative trading zone. Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reported that 2.75% of all mortgages tracked were in the process of foreclosure at the end of 2Q. An increase in the number of foreclosures has been seen in California and Florida resulting in erasing improvements in the mortgage industry in several states including but not limited to Texas and Massachusetts. We've heard from Federal Reserve Board members in recent days indicating they anticipate a potential of increase in foreclosure rates in the futures. The housing crisis is far from over and again, FOMC members have issued comments to address their concerns of the same. Employment data released was worse than expected, setting the market tone. Over the next few days, the east coast and Florida are expected to experience severe weather moving in from 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic. Crude oil moved lower today, regardless of the storm warnings for the Gulf Coast.

Economic data released today:
Employment Situation: U.S. August Nonfarm Payrolls fell 84K as compared to consensus of a drop by 75K; U.S. August Unemployment Rate came in at 6.1% as compared to consensus of 5.8%; U.S. August Average Hourly Earnings rose $0.07 to $18.14; U.S. August Manufacturing Payrolls fell 61K; U.S. August Service-Producing fell 27K; U.S. August Overall Workweek 0.0 Hour to 33.7 Hours; U.S. July Payrolls revised to fell 60K from a drop by 51K; U.S. July Unemployment left unrevised at 5.7%; U.S. Jobless Rate Highest since September 2003; U.S. Manufacturing Job Loss biggest since July 2003.

Hot Stock pick on the move today for day trading:
CF Industries Holdings Incorporated (NYSE: CF) posted a nice gain of over 7 3/4 points on the trading session. CF provided a nice trading range for day traders of just over 13 points.
