Zantrio Market Review May 3, 2011

Stocks were mixed for most of the session after today's earnings reports. This morning, Pfizer reported slightly higher earnings than last year's first quarter, but also reported a decline in sales from last year. Pfizer said it earned a profit of $2.22 billion, or $0.28 per share in the quarter, up from last year's earnings of $0.25 per share. Analysts' were expecting the company to earn around $0.29 per share on sales of $16.59 billion. Sales were down from $16.9 billion last year to $16.5 billion in the first quarter of 2011. Shares of Pfizer were falling. Shares of Clorox were also falling after it reported third-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings of $1.03 per share. Today's results were compared with earnings of $1.07 per share in the same quarter a year ago; analysts were expecting the company to report earnings of $1.04 per share. Sales increased 1.3%in the quarter to $1.30 million from $1.28 million in the year-ago quarter, however results were still lower than the $1.32 billion analyst's forecasted.

As the session progressed, stocks began to slip further into the negative. All three major indexes were falling today. Commodity prices were falling as gold fell by almost $20 an ounce. As commodity prices fell, the dollar rose versus other major currencies. Despite the dollar's decline against the yen, the greenback rose versus the euro and the pound and the dollar index rose by 0.2% after hitting a new three year low earlier in the session. With just under an hour remaining in the session, the Dow was at a loss of almost 40 points....
