The "Chart of the Day" is the Tyson Foods (TSN), which showed up on today's Barchart "What's Hot" List. Tyson is up 3.1 standard deviations or 6.4% today and has gapped to a new 17-month high. Tyson Foods has rallied sharply on its report this morning of fiscal-Q1 EPS of 42 cents, which was far above the analyst consensus of 18 cents. Revenue of $6.63 billion was slightly higher than the analyst consensus of $6.58 billion. Tyson's fortunes have improved substantially in recent months due to stronger consumer and export demand and the likelihood that feed costs will remain subdued with last summer's big US crops and big crops in South America during its current summer. Tyson's CEO said that consumers "starting to feel better about their economic situation" and that concerns about grocery store spending continue to ease and that consumers are less concerned about limiting their restaurant visits. Tyson sees little change in the fundamentals of the beef business. Tyson sees an improvement in the chicken business with improving demand and a better pricing environment. BB&T upgraded Tyson to a Buy from Hold on Jan 22 citing a strong near-term outlook and raised its target to $17. Credit Suisse upgraded Tyson to Outperform from Neutral on Jan 14 and raised its target to $16 from $13, saying that Tyson is a cyclical stock that is in the early stages of a rebound in protein processing.
How we found the Chart of the Day:
We found the "Chart of the Day" by scanning the Barchart "All Exchanges Daily What's Hot". That list highlights stocks with large price movements in terms of 20-day standard deviations, rather than percentage moves. Ranking stock price movement based on standard deviations rather than percentage changes puts all the stocks on a level playing field and spots stocks with unusually large movements relative to their recent performance, as opposed to percentage changes which tend to include stocks that naturally have high volatility.
